One of my favorite plants for the front of sunny medium-dry flower beds, Ruellia humilis is a very hardy short and fuzzy herbaceous perennial with beautiful trumpet-shaped (petunia-like, but not actually related to petunias) lavender flowers from June to August. Each flower opens for just a day, but mature clumps produce multiple new flowers per day, so be sure to plant in mass to get the most out of the variable bloom time. The plant will self-sow and spread over time, aiding in the development of a low, bushy ground cover mass. It pairs well with little bluestem, butterfly weed, Coreopsis spp., asters. and Penstemon spp.
A favorite of long-tongued bees, such as bumblebees and long-horned bees, this plant has medium-high wildlife value. Butterflies visit for nectar and the Ohio Buckeye and Mourning Cloak butterflies use the foliage as a larval host plant. Deer and rabbits generally avoid the hairy leaves.
